Child-centered classes
My approach to music education
"Since the beginning of time, children have not liked to study. They would much rather play, and if you have their interests at heart, you will let them learn while they play." - Carl Orff
Beginner classes focus on...
Kinesthetic Learning
The first few weeks of classes (ages 5 - 7) on the piano or violin will use a hands-on approach to learning. This helps keep even the youngest or most energetic students engaged with the material.
Teaching Tools
Engaging Children to Learn
Music Theory
Beginner lessons focus on...
A portion of each class is reserved to helping the student understand rhythm patterns, note names, intervals, key signatures, time signatures and tempos. These activities take place away from the piano or violin and allow the student time to more fully grasp musical concepts.
Learning an Instrument
Creating a home practice routine
The power of repetition: improves speed, increases confidence, and strengthens the connections in the brain that help children learn.
Beginner Lessons focus on...
Practice at home
Students are routinely sent home with charts to help keep track of their progress at home. In order to progress on any instrument, students must work with the teacher to ensure that they play at home during the week. Practicing is not always fun, but it is a necessary part of the learning process.

Violin Classes
Violin lessons use a combination of Suzuki, Paul Rolland, and traditional methods. Added focus on proper technique, body movement and relaxation are important aspects that are worked on during every lesson.
Recital Opportunities
Learning to perform for an audience
Students will have ample opportunity to learn to play for others by participating in studio recitals.
Every Semester includes...
Recitals
Students have the opportunity to play in studio recitals once or twice per semester. Violin students sometimes collaborate by playing group pieces, many sibling students play duets, and all students play at least one solo piece of their choice.
Meet the Teacher
About Therese Miller
Therese has taught private piano and violin classes in the Champaign-Urbana area for the past decade and she treasures time spent with the many families that make up the 75-student music studio.
Therese Miller studied with Masumi Per Rostad (Pacifica Quartet), Thomas LeVeck, (St. Louis Symphony), Dr. David Hobbs (Eastern Illinois University) and completed Suzuki Violin training books I and II with Ann Montzka Smelser at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Therese plans to attend the Paul Rolland String Pedagogy Workshop at the University of Illinois during the summer of 2022. In addition to her private studio, Therese teaches piano and violin classes at the Montessori School of Champaign-Urbana, and volunteers her time at the Don Moyer Boys & Girls Club giving group violin classes to 1st and 2nd grade students.
Therese enjoys finding ways to teach young children that makes the learning process enjoyable and interactive. She finds much of her inspiration from other teachers, as well as the hands-on approach of the Montessori method.
Her hobbies include baking, travel, reading, outdoor activities and salsa dancing.
